Collection of MAX.TAN

This piece from the Spring Summer 2021 collection Wanita, meaning women in Malay, was inspired by the extensive possibilities of the sarong. Tan reimagines heritage by adopting the wrapping identifiers of the cultural garment but incorporating it into a jumpsuit silhouette. Soft, sculptural forms are created with extended pattern pieces and slits that allow the garment to flutter as the wearer moves.

Max Tan is known for his minimalist yet distinctive silhouettes created from experiments in proportion and volume. Inspired by the design language of heritage garments like the Indian sari, Tan reinterprets tradition by incorporating wrap style closures and excess fabrics into his designs. Founded in 2010, his brand MAX.TAN found early success in the international press and was the first Asian label to showcase a collection at Modefabriek (2010), a trade event in Amsterdam for fashion industry professionals to build connections.
