An inaugural exhibition delving into Singapore fashion, #SGFASHIONNOW is a curated experience for visitors to discover the sources of inspiration behind the fashion pieces on display.
Students from LASALLE College of the Arts’ School of Fashion proposed a line-up of programmes to engage members of the public, including talks, workshops, and personally guided tours of the exhibition. The dedicated docents at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) would agree that a significant amount of time and effort go into the preparation of any guided tour. The students at LASALLE have trained and practised diligently to create tours that will express their individual passions and perspectives.

From an immersive e-publication to the onsite and online programme offerings, the students have embraced the new normal that the ACM team has had to adopt since COVID-19 arrived last year.
ACM LOBBY
When formulating and discussing ideas with the ACM team, it was clear from the beginning that students were interested in highlighting the craft behind the clothing – the intangible cultural heritage that informed each stitch and design decision. Audiences of all ages will gain invaluable insight into design and craftsmanship through hands-on workshops, and by following a self-guided discovery trail that draws inspiration from the ACM collection. #InnovationInTradition is in line with ACM’s shift to becoming Singapore’s National Museum of Asian Antiquities and Decorative Art. The students’ hard work in assisting us in championing this theme, particularly with Singapore fashion designers, deserves commendation.

This exhibition and accompanying programmes adapt to the future with new strategies to engage audiences. By taking a hybrid approach, they will integrate both physical and digital components. From an immersive e-publication to the onsite and online programme offerings, the students have embraced the new normal that the ACM team has had to adopt since COVID-19 arrived last year. Using digital tools to complement and amplify the physical displays in the #SGFASHIONNOW exhibition, we move forward with the knowledge that our visitorship will extend past Singapore’s borders. We hope to strike a chord with like-minded individuals everywhere who are keen to know more about the Singapore fashion scene.
Visitors will find themselves immersed in a compelling exhibition of ideas, derived from the ACM’s two-fold collaboration with LASALLE College of the Arts’ School of Fashion, and the Textiles and Fashion Federation (TaFF).
We hope that everyone will enjoy the programmes revealing the historical and contemporary influences underpinning the outfits on display.
The ACM Audience team would like to thank everyone involved in this inaugural project,
in particular, Circe Henestrosa, Nadya Wang, and Daniela Monasterios-Tan at LASALLE’s School of Fashion for their tremendous energy, dedication, and support. It has been a real pleasure to work with the students — Gabrielle Yeo, Celestine Wong, Jessica Faustine Suwito, Felicia Toh, and Guo Li Le — and to curate experiences with them for the public.
